Miramichi History and Your Tour
Miramichi has a rich and unique history. First Nations people have hunted and fished its shores for thousands of years. French Acadians settled here and hundreds lost their lives during the Acadian Expulsion. Historic sites and archeological remains tell their story of struggle and sorrow. Tall pines and a vast fishery brought William Davidson here in the late 18th century and Miramichi’s rich shipbuilding heritage began. The Irish settled on the river during the Potato famine in the mid nineteenth century. This history remains and is brought to life for you as you cruise the shores of this historic river and the proud people who call it home. During your tour you will see historical buildings and sites from the water and be able to touch history with on board living history displays. You may also see nesting eagles, a First nations food fishery, gaspereau fishers, and of course the king of the river...is often spotted, leaping out of the water... the famed Miramichi salmon.
